Happy International Women’s Day to all my girls out there – on the road, off the road, or somewhere in between!
This holiday is HUGE in Eastern Europe, especially Ukraine and Russia, which is why it’s such a big deal to me. Happy to see it is becoming more recognized or at least talked about throughout the entire world (and I am basing this observation entirely on Google’s home page for today).
I’m wondering if and how it’s being celebrated where you are? Personally, I am in Sweden where equality is king and celebrating yourself is looked down upon, but on my way home from having a fika today my friend and I passed by a little Women’s Day demonstration. Haven’t talked to anyone in America yet but I can imagine there it’s probably being celebrated just as much as International Friendship Day. I know in Ukraine people are going bananas. Lots of pictures in my Facebook newsfeed showing up of flowers, bottles of champagne, chocolates, ENGAGEMENT RINGS..
It’s a national holiday in Ukraine (as well as Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam), so people really take it seriously. It’s a day to celebrate all the wonderful women in your life – lovers, relatives, co-workers, friends – and I think that is just fantastic.
Speaking of celebrating wonderful women, let’s hear it for these babushkas….
Snapped this photo in L’viv, Ukraine. I can’t convey in words the enormous amount of respect I feel for these women. You can see it on their faces and even hear first-hand accounts if you are lucky enough of just how much a lot of these ladies have been through in their lifetime. And are still going through, clearly, or else they wouldn’t be sitting out in the cold for 8 hours a day just to make $10. They are true warriors.
